Quick Healthy Snacking Recipe | Is Flapjack a healthy snack?

There is nothing healthy when consumed in excess. This is true for all foods whether they contain sugar or not.

Whenever you are snacking, do that in moderation which shall not compromise your good health. However, if you compare these flapjacks with other snacks, these:

are not fried

Do not use all-purpose flour

Do not use refined white sugar

So, calorie-wise these are not bombing you. They can definitely be regarded as healthier snacks due to the use of oats and addition of seeds and bananas. Let’s see which ingredients we are going to use.

Ingredients for Sugar-free Banana Flapjacks

You will need these handful of ingredients for making these lovely flapjacks

  • Oats – Instant or Regular
  • Butter – You may use unsalted or salted butter.
  • Jaggery Powder – You may use chopped jaggery as well in the same quantity. Just melt it and mix in. But make sure to mix everything quickly as it will start setting.
  • Ripe Bananas – any variety will do
  • Sesame seeds– these are optional so you may skip them
  • Dried Cherries and Cranberries – But, these contain added sugars(necessary for preserving them). So, if you are avoiding added sugars, you may skip both.
I have used dried cherries and not Maraschino cherries that are generally used in cake decorating and for making Black Forest Cake.

How to make these flapjacks with oats?

For you to get a better idea of how these are made step by step, I managed to click few pictures from my phone but they are not of the best quality. But they will be helpful for you to understand the steps.

Making these yummy bars at home is easy-peasy. Let’s see how that is done.

  1. Start by roasting the oats on a low flame. Stir frequently.
  2. Until it cools, line a 7 by 5 inch cake tin. If you do not have this size, you can use any stainless steel plate and apply a layer of butter/oil.roasting the oats and mashing banana for making banana flapjack bars
  3. In a plate, mash the banana and add jaggery powder, melted butter, seeds. Mix with a spatula until everything comes together.
  4. Once the oats have cooled, divide them in to two equal parts. Powder one part in a mixer grinder.
  5. Add both parts to the banana-jaggery mixture and bring it all together like a dough. You can add the cherries and cranberries right now or in the next step.
mixing ingredients and powdering roasted oats
  6. Now, transfer this mixture to the lined cake tin/steel plate and press till the desired thickness. Now, roughly chop the cherries and cranberries and press on the top layer of this mixture. You can use them as a whole if you prefer. Spread them all over and press them a little on the top.
  7. Preheat the oven for 10 minutes at 180 degree Celsius and bake for 10 minutes at the same temperature. Let it cool for 10 minutes again before slicing.
mix all ingredients and press them in the pan
  8. You may slice it in the form of “squares” or in bar shape like I have done in the picture. They taste fabulous irrespective of their shape.
  9. Once they are cooled and sliced, take a few pictures before you get yourself a bite. They won’t last long once you start eating them. So click the pictures first.
